AQA GCSE Biology model answer notes

Memorising my notes will give you all the content you need for the exam, as they cover the entire specification (subject content). However, many exam questions go beyond simple factual recall.

For GCSE, only about 40% of the exam for tests your knowledge and understanding (AO1). Another 40% assesses your ability to apply this knowledge (AO2), while 20% assesses your analysis skills (AO3).

To achieve a grade 9, you need to develop a good exam technique. While learning the content, you should dedicate a significant portion of your revision to practicing past paper questions and working on skills like application, maths, evaluation and data analysis. Some of these have been included at the end of each section so you can get a feel for what to expect.

There are 3 things to keep in mind when using these to revise:

1. Before trying to memorise anything, make sure you really understand it. These notes cover what you need to know for the exam (AQA), but using other resources alongside can help strengthen your overall understanding. Youtube videos are great for this, you can annotate the notes with extra context alongside watching them.
2. Always prioritise active revision methods. Methods like blurting work really well for this, and my favourite of all is using memory tricks. Acronyms, associations, mnemonics… anything that helps it stick. Just make sure you’re doing more than just reading them.
3. Finally, make sure you’re practising exam questions alongside doing these. It’s so important that you can apply your knowledge and develop all the other skills required to succeed in your exams.

My notes are designed for the AQA specification. It’s best to base your revision around resources specific to your exam board, as there are important differences between each one.

That said, many students who study other exam boards still find my notes helpful due to the overlap in content. If you do decide to use them, I recommend treating them as supplementary material for topics that overlap. It would be useful to compare both specifications (found on the exam board website) before purchasing.

All my notes come with two versions: one for GCSE Biology (Triple) and another for GCSE Combined Science Biology (Trilogy). In the Trilogy version, I’ve removed all the additional triple-only content. Other than that, the content that you need to know is exactly the same. Chemistry and physics are not included.

For foundation tier students, I’ve clearly labelled any ‘Higher tier only’ content. You can just skip these sections. There's very little of this for paper 1 topics!
